Taoiseach's support for Bruton praised

FINE GAEL leader Enda Kenny has welcomed Taoiseach Brian Cowen’s support for John Bruton’s bid to become president of the European Council.

Mr Kenny said he was glad the Taoiseach had come to the conclusion that Mr Bruton’s candidacy was worthy of support.

“I believe that the credentials of the candidate involved are precisely what Europe requires at a time of necessity for cohesion and coherence and for establishing a Europe that is seen to be strong and energetic,” he added.

Mr Kenny asked what direct contact the Taoiseach intended making on behalf of Mr Bruton’s candidacy. Mr Cowen said he had not been asked by Mr Bruton to put forward his name on behalf of the Irish Government or to conduct a campaign on his behalf.

“In the letter he forwarded to me, he said that he wished to express his interest in being considered for the position, particularly in the event that no serving member of the council is available,” he added.

Mr Cowen said the Swedish presidency would proceed with confidential bilateral discussions with the heads of government to ascertain what level of support existed for any prospective candidate or any existing member of the council who might be interested in the position.

“Until the Swedish presidency does that, and conveys to me its assessment of the situation, I do not believe anything can be done other than consider what is the position.

“If it is the case, as Mr Bruton has outlined, that no member of the council is emerging as a prospective president, he is making himself available as a candidate,” the Taoiseach added. “We must wait and see how the situation develops.”
