  • Mr Shaw's profession, an anti-romantic comedy

George Bernard Shaw was in his 39th year when he wrote Arms and the Man. He already had gathered an impressive list of failures. In Dublin he had failed decisively as an estate agent. "My heart was not in the job," he admitted. At the age of 19 he went to England determined to set himself up as "a professional man of genius". p

  • This sporting life

Within a week of being appointed by the Government to the RTE Authority, the 1972 Olympic pentathlon champion, Mary Peters, was made a Dame of the British Empire. The latter honour appears to have been more of a surprise than the call from Dublin. p
