Met Éireann issues weather warning

Met Éireann has issued a severe weather alert warning of very heavy rainfall in the west and southwest of the country.

The meteorological service said amounts of up to 50mm of rain is likely in parts of Cos Cork, Kerry, Galway and Mayo for a 24-hour period from 6am today.

It expects further rain to fall tomorrow bringing a total of up to 80mm in these areas over the two days. However, it added it will not be as bad as conditions seen last month.

The service also forecasts strong south to southeast winds gusting between 80km/h and 100km/h in exposed places, strongest in the southwest.

Following the alert the Road Safety Authority (RSA) advised all road users to take extra care when travelling especially in the western coastal counties as the poor weather will create “potentially hazardous” conditions.

The authority also posted advice on using the road in severe weather on its website.

AA roadwatch also warned drivers to slow down and to stay a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

It said there are wet conditions in most places this morning with reports of surface water and minor flooding in the west.
