Man (32) shot dead in Dublin

Gardaí have appealed for assistance following the murder of a 32-year-old man in Hartstown, Dublin 15, last night.

It is understood the man was standing outside a house on Oakview Way talking to his brother and sister when two cars pulled up across the road. The man crossed the road and a man got out of one of the cars and shot him twice in the body with a shotgun.

The man, named locally as father-of-two Wayne Doherty, was taken to James Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown where he died at 5.37 am. Gardaí declared a murder investigation and the scene was preserved for a full technical examination.

The scene of the killing, in a quiet residential area, remained sealed off this afternoon and a large force of gardaí were carrying out door-to-door inquiries.

Detectives want to talk to anyone who was in the vicinity of the scene of the murder at Oakview Way between 11 pm and midnight last night, Superintendent Dave Dowling of Blanchardstown Garda station told a press briefing this afternoon.

In particular, gardaí are anxious to talk to the occupants of two cars seen leaving the estate at speed at this time, he said. The results of a post mortem being carried out by deputy state pathologist Dr Michael Curtis this afternoon are expected this evening.
