Ireland is dispatching an envoy to Sudan in a effort to secure the release of Irish aid worker Sharon Commins who was kidnapped from a compound in the Darfur area yesterday.
A Department of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman said a delegation including Ambassador Gerry Corr would be travelling from Cairo to Sudan and was expected to arrive tonight or early tomorrow. The Government jet has been sent to bring the team to Sudan, where Ireland does not have an embassy. “He will meet with Sudanese officials and the UN and do whatever is necessary,” the spokeswoman added.
