Sony said its third-quarter profit plunged 95 per cent, as the global recession undermined sales of televisions and cameras.

Net income was 10.4 billion yen ($115 million) in the three months ended December 31st, down from 200.2 billion yen a year earlier, as sales plunged 25 per cent to 2.15 trillion yen and the company posted an 18 billion yen operating loss.

The figures are in line with preliminary results disclosed on January 23rd.

Chief executive Howard Stringer last week said the company will post a record operating loss in the year ending March, almost four times analysts’ estimates, because of the stronger yen and an increase in reorganization expenses.

Sony reiterated that it expects to post a 150 billion yen net loss in the full year ending March 31st.
