And in other news, dogs at polling stations win landslide

Voters across the country take to Twitter to share pictures of their pets as they vote

As voters went to the polls in the UK there was one theme dominating social media and no, it was not policies, political parties or politicians.

It started with a question - can you bring your dog to polling stations? - and ended in a debate, with many voters tweeting images of their pooches accompanying them as they went to vote to support their case.

As it happens, on most days dogs are barred from buildings typically used as polling stations; such as schools and community centres, but not on polling day.

The result was that many voters across the country took to Twitter to share pictures of their dogs accompanying them on their way to vote, using the hashtag #Dogsatpollingstations.
