While you were sleeping, Scotland has been counting

Here’s what happened overnight...

- OFFICIAL RESULT: Overall vote: 3,623,344. Yes: 1,617,989. No 2,001,926. Rejected ballots: 3,429. Turnout 84.6 per cent.

-With 31 out of 32 constituencies declared by 6.20am, the Yes side has 153,2990 and the No side has 1,914,187 reflecting 45 per cent to 55 per cent of the overall vote.

- Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond concedes.

- Fife result pushes No side over the line

- British Prime Minister David Cameron stop short of claiming a No win as he tweets at 5.46am: "I've spoken to Alistair Darling - and congratulated him on an well-fought campaign."

- The Scottish referendum count has been continuing since 10pm last night with a No vote now looking certain.

- A declaration was expected about 7am.

- At 4.54am Sky news called the result as a No to independence following the result in Glasgow, Scotland’s biggest city.

- Glasgow voted Yes to leave the UK but Aberdeen voted No, as did Shetland and the Orkney islands.

- British Prime Minister David Cameron was expected to deliver a live televised address from 10 Downing Street after 7am. He faces pressure to deliver on "devo max" handing new powers for local control to Scotland.

- Ten cases of suspected electoral fraud are being investigated in Glasgow.

- A record voter turnout passed 90 per cent in some areas. It was lower in Glasgow at 75 per cent.

- As the results emerged news spread that Alex Salmond of the Scottish Nationalist Party was not expected to attend his local count centre.

- The Dundee count was disrupted repeatedly by a fire alarm going off resulting in the building being evacuated. It eventually returned a Yes vote.
