A huge rat weighing about five kilograms was caught in a grain market in Guiyang, southwest China's Guizhou Province on Wednesday night.

A man named Han said he discovered the rat. "We drove it out and captured it with a cage," said Han.

A crowd of people, mostly workers at the grain market, came to see it that night. However, no one knew what exactly the creature was at first.

The following day, Guiyang wildlife protection station identified it as a Chinese bamboo rat .

The Chinese bamboo rat is a species of rodents in the spalacidae family. It is sold in Chinese food markets because its meat is reknowned for its taster and nutrition, and its fur is soft and thick. A lot of people breed Chinese bamboo rats for their current economic and medical value in China.
