Five dead, 10 missing after ship sinks off Cameroon coast

Of the 12 people rescued, eight were from Equatorial Guinea

Five people died and 10 are missing after a ship carrying 27 people from Cameroon to neighboring Equatorial Guinea sank off the coast of Tiko, an official said.

Five bodies were retrieved by deep-sea divers from the marine military corps, Divisional Officer for Tiko, Che Patrick Ngwashi, told reporters.

“Most of the passengers were business people,” he said.

The sinking occurred in heavy rain and violent wind, the ship’s captain, Eusevio Andreu Mejia, said in an interview. Of the 12 people rescued, eight were from Equatorial Guinea.
