Two fatal crashes took place yesterday in Co Clare and Co Galway.

A woman in her 20s died in a single-car crash near Ennis, Co Clare, shortly before 4pm when her vehicle struck a barrier. She was travelling with another woman near Ballylion, Barefield, when the incident took place on the northbound lane of the M18.

The second woman, believed to be in her 40s, was treated for minor injuries.

The passenger, understood to be the dead woman’s mother, was seriously injured and was trapped in the car for some time. It is understood they were returning to Athenry, Co Galway, from Shannon Airport.

Earlier yesterday a man in his 50s was killed when a car hit a wall in Kildaree, Williamstown, Co Galway, at about 9.15am.Two passengers were injured but not seriously.
