DUBLIN:Gardaí are investigating an armed robbery in which the biggest chain of toy stores in the Republic was robbed of some of its Christmas takings after a manager was abducted.

The incident occurred on Wednesday night when cash was taken from the Smyths store in the Fonthill Retail Park, Clondalkin, west Dublin.

The manager had just arrived home from work when he was abducted by at least two raiders and driven back to his workplace. He was told he would he shot unless he got the gang cash held on the premises following a busy trading day in the run-up to Christmas. It was also made clear to him that because the gang knew where his home was, they could harm his family at a later date if he did not co-operate.He brought the raiders into an office where he managed to gain access to cash, believed to be about €10,000. Once the gang members got the money, they fled the shop.

They drove off in the manager’s car, leaving him behind in the shop. He managed to raise the alarm at about 10pm.
