A woman was airlifted to Mayo General Hospital with suspected spinal injuries after falling near the summit of Croagh Patrick, Co Mayo, yesterday evening.

The 40-year-old, believed to be British, was with a group of climbers on the rocky final ascent of the pilgrimage mountain when she fell.

Her husband made the emergency call and reported that she had hurt her back.

She was first attended to by members of Mayo mountain rescue but became very cold and it was decided to airlift her to hospital.

Malin Head Coast Guard was alerted at 4.45pm and the coastguard helicopter, deployed from its base at Sligo airport, arrived within 20 minutes.

The woman was winched aboard the helicopter and transferred to the hospital in Castlebar for medical evaluation and treatment.
