‘Man on Bridge’: collection marks 50 years of snap decisions

Public support is being sought for a project on a Dublin street photographer who would be well remembered by Irish people of a certain age.

Arthur Fields, a Ukrainian Jew, was a street photographer who took pictures of passersby on O’Connell Bridge for over 50 years. It is estimated he took 182,500 photographs from the early 1930s until he stopped in 1985 at the age of 84.

Man on Bridge will be an online collection point for his work, enabling people who might have a Fields photograph buried away in their collection to contribute these to a web-based archive.

The resulting database will be integrated into an online story of Fields, on a rolling basis, as photos are submitted.

Combining video, archival still image, text and audio, Man on Bridge will allow users to explore Fields's life and the photos he took – and the impact his images have had.

Man on Bridge is an entry by El Zorrero Films to the Arthur Guinness Projects, an initiative celebrating people whose ideas and passion are enhancing modern culture in Ireland.
