Scientists in Florida have caught the biggest Burmese python ever recorded.

The snake measuring 5.18m (17ft) and weighing 74kg (11 and a half stone) was found in Everglades National Park, the University of Florida announced.

It was pregnant with 87 eggs.

The snakes are native to south-east Asia but have established a population of tens of thousands in the Everglades.

It was put to sleep and is being studied at the Florida Museum of Natural History.

Scientists said the python's stats show just how pervasive the invasive snakes, which are native to south-east Asia, have become in south Florida.
