Power of pink: fundraiser to aid family of dead Wexford student
MORE THAN 2,000 people participated in a fundraising walk in Wexford town yesterday for DCU student Nicola Furlong (21) following her death in Japan 11 weeks ago.
The participants (many of whom were wearing Nicola’s favourite colour pink) brought the town to a standstill as everyone walked 4km around the town, returning to Charlotte Street via the quayside.
The Pink Walk the Walk event drew crowds from across the county and the southeast to Wexford.
Ms Furlong was killed in Tokyo in May and a US man has been charged in relation to her killing. All proceeds from the walk will go into an account that will pay the cost of flying Ms Furlong’s parents, Andrew and Angie, and sister Andrea to Japan and their accommodation there for any trial, as well as funding either a student abroad programme or an awards event in her name.
Angie said she was delighted with the turnout. “We have drawn strength from all this. We are so grateful to everyone for coming.”
