ONE OF the Republic’s leading traditional musicians is about to make his way into the Guinness Book of Recordsas the fastest fiddle player in the world.

Frankie Gavin of De Dannan is expecting confirmation that he has set a world record after hitting 150 beats per minute while performing the Fox Hunter’s reel.

Independent observers from the Guinness Book of Recordswitnessed the attempt in NUI Galway on Tuesday night.

“We are just waiting for confirmation to come through but we have been told we have set the record,” said the Galway musician.

The 54-year-old re-assembled De Dannan last year and is shortly to tour China with a new album, Jigs, Reels Rock ‘n’ Roll.
