Man dies in building site accident
A man (63) has died following an accident at a building site in Monaghan town.
The man, whose name has not yet been released, is believed to have been a manager at the construction site for a new VEC campus at Armagh Road in the town.
He was involved in an accident at about 11.40am and was pronounced dead at the scene. The building site has been shut down to allow the HSA and gardaí to begin an investigation.
Matt Carthy, chairman of Monaghan VEC, said the news was a “major blow”.
He said: “The VEC is a flagship development for Monaghan. Up until today, it has been a very positive news story, especially in these straitened times.
“On behalf of the VEC I would like to pass on our condolences to the man’s family and to offer our assistance to them in the weeks and months ahead.”
The €37.5 million development is the largest educational building project in the state this year.
The new campus will comprise an Irish-language primary and secondary school, a further-education college and a theatre.
