Colm MacEochaidh SC has been nominated by the Government for appointment by the President as a judge of the High Court.

Born in 1963, he was educated in UCD and the King’s Inns and called to the bar in 1987. He became a senior counsel in 2009. He is a council member of the Irish unit of anti-corruption non-governmental organisation Transparency International and a former member of the council of An Taisce.

An expert in planning law, public law and general commercial law, he is most widely known as one of two barristers (the other being Michael Smith) who engaged a Newry firm of solicitors to place an advertisement in The Irish Times in 1995 offering an award of £10,000 for information leading to the conviction of anyone involved in corrupt land rezoning. Among those who replied was James Gogarty, who later gave evidence to the Planning Tribunal.

He ran for Fine Gael in Dublin South East in 2002, but withdrew his name before the last election.
