Louth casts vote over naming of Boyne bridge
The bridge spanning the Boyne river on the M1 motorway has never been named, despite it being locally known as the Boyne cable bridge, councillors in Louth were told yesterday.
The saga over the proposal to name it after former president Mary McAleese continued at Louth County Council yesterday when the casting vote of the chairman was used to support the name “Mary McAleese Boyne Valley Bridge”. However, the bridge is primarily in Co Meath and its county councillors want it to be called simply the “Mary McAleese Bridge”. Joan Martin, Louth county manager, said: “The permanent dedication and naming of such an important piece of regional and national infrastructure is obviously one that engages people. We now look forward to working with our colleagues in Meath on reaching a conclusion to this process.”
