THE DEATH has taken place of Gordon Holmes, Limerick’s first State Solicitor, who held many roles in the cultural and social life of the region.

Mr Holmes was chairman of the Parole Board and the former Garda Síochána Complaints Board. His firm of solicitors, Holmes O’Malley Sexton, is one of the country’s largest law firms, and he had a distinguished legal career that spanned 45 years.

Mr Holmes is survived by his wife Hilary, sons Keith and Gordon and daughters Valerie and Melanie.

In a statement yesterday, Mayor of Limerick Cllr Maria Byrne said she was “very saddened at the passing of a true gentleman and an outstanding Limerick citizen”.
