Thieves have escaped with several thousand euro of jewellery from a Co Donegal shop.

The gang struck at about 4am yesterday at McCullagh’s jewellery shop at Letterkenny Shopping Centre.

In a well-planned raid, the gang got into the shopping centre through the roof. Once inside, they broke into the shop by cutting a hole into the premises from an adjoining store, The Zone.

Most of the items stolen were taken from display shelves. The owners are carrying out a stock-take to see what is missing.

Detectives are checking CCTV footage.

Garda Supt Vincent O’Brien said he believed the gang had planned the robbery for some time. “It appears to be a very well-planned and well-executed operation. These people knew exactly what they were about. We would ask anyone who was in the vicinity between 3.45am and 4.15am to contact gardaí.”
