THE EDITOR of The Irish Times, Geraldine Kennedy, has announced her intention to retire in September at the end of a nine-year term at the helm of the paper.

She told colleagues at the afternoon news conference yesterday that her contract would expire in September when she would reach the age of 60.

Ms Kennedy added that she had told the Board of The Irish Times Limited that she would facilitate the process of selecting her replacement in due course.

She will remain as editor until her successor is appointed.
