'Irish Times' Debate: Fianna Fáil's role in Ireland under discussion

Sherry from Trinity College’s Historical Society won the Demosthenes Trophy for best team at last night’s Irish TimesDebate Final 2010.

It was the 50th anniversary of the event.

The pair were opposing the motion that “This House Believes that Ireland Owes a Debt of Gratitude to Fianna Fáil 1926 – 2010”.

In a show of hands, the audience voted resoundingly against the motion, which was debated at the Helix in Dublin City University.

The winner in the individual category, and winner of the Christina Murphy Memorial Trophy, was Sean O’Quigley from Griffith College Dublin.

Nobel laureate and former first minister of Northern Ireland Lord David Trimble chaired the debate.

Twelve debaters from five third-level institutions took part in the event.
