Woman cyclist dies in hospital after Blackrock collision

Gardaí seek witnesses to Frascati Road incident involving woman and truck

A female cyclist was killed yesterday when her bicycle collided with an articulated lorry on the outskirts of Blackrock village in Co Dublin.

Louise Butler (26), from Co Wicklow, was on her bicycle when the incident occurred at around 8.45am at the junction of Frascati Road and Carysfort Avenue.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and Ms Butler was brought by ambulance to St Vincent’s Hospital for treatment before losing her fight for life some time later.

Sources last night said it appeared the lorry was making a turn at the junction and that the cyclist “got caught up in it”.

A Garda spokesman said forensic collision investigators carried out an assessment of the scene, the lorry and the bicycle involved.

“They will forensically piece together what occurred over the coming days and that will form part of the investigation,” he said.

Local Blackrock councillor Victor Boyhan said his thoughts were with the family of the woman killed.

“The local community is shocked by the tragic accident and loss of the young female cyclist’s life,” he said. “The circumstance around this accident will be fully investigated by An Gardai Síochána and the Road Safety Authority.

“It’s normally a very safe part of the area because there are so many sets of traffic lights. My thoughts and prayers and that of the community are with the family.”

The Frascati Road was closed for a period to allow for the technical examination of the scene of the collision.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident to contact Blackrock Garda station on (01) 6665200 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
