Garda says deaths in Co Wexford may be linked to drugs

Bodies of man and woman found in upstairs bedroom of a house in Clonroche

Gardaí are investigating the discovery of the bodies of a man and woman at a house in Co Wexford who are thought to have died from drug overdoses.

The bodies were discovered in the upstairs bedroom of a home in Woodside Estate, Clonroche village, at about 4.30pm on Monday.

It is understood the man in his late 20s and the woman in her early 30s were a couple.

Both are understood to originally be from nearby Enniscorthy but have been living in Clonroche, which is located on the N30 New Ross-Enniscorthy road.

The scene was sealed off immediately and has since undergone an examination by members of the Garda Technical Bureau.

The bodies were examined by a pathologist at the scene before being removed for postmortems at Waterford UniversityHospital.

The direction of the Garda investigation will be determined when the results of the postmortems become available but it is not believed foul play was involved. Gardaí from Enniscorthy are investigating.

A garda spokesman said it appeared the man and woman had died of drug overdoses.

He did not believe the circumstances of the deaths were suspicious at this stage.

Local Sinn Féin councillor, Johnny Mythen said the deaths were a terrible shock and a great tragedy for everyone throughout Wexford.

“Obviously all of our thoughts are with both families straight away,” he said.

He said Clonroche had already had its share of tragedy.

“The community has suffered a lot in the last few years,” he said. “This brings it all back.”
