Two men charged with robbery at Waterville post office

Two men have been remanded in custody after they were charged with the robbery of € 5,000 in an armed raid on Waterville post office in south Kerry earlier this week.

Marcus O'Rourke (46) and Brian O'Sullivan (32), were brought before a special sitting of Killarney District Court amid tight security on Saturday night where they were charged with a total of four offences

Mr O'Rourke from Rathanane, Kilcummin, Co Kerry and Mr O'Sullivan from Coolies, Muckross, Co Kerry were charged with the robbery of €5,000 from Lisa O'Reilly Foran at Waterville post office on August 3rd.

They were also charged with possession of a firearm or an imitation firearm with intent to commit a robbery at the post office on the same occasion.

Both men were also charged with endangerment by ramming an unmarked Garda car occupied by Garda Christopher Manton and Garda Celine Ryle at Kill, Kibgobnet, Co Kerry on the same day.

They both were also charged with causing criminal damage to an unmarked Hyundai garda car, the property of Chief Supt Con Cadogan of Kerry Garda Division.

Supt Flor Murphy told the special sitting that gardaí were objecting to bail for both accused and the court heard that gardaí feared they would commit further offences if granted bail.

Defence solicitor, Nuala Liston said that neither of her clients were seeking bail at this point and Judge James O'Connor remanded both in custody to appear at Tralee District Court on Thursday.

Judge O’Connor granted both men free legal aid.
