Pub in ‘Killinaskully’ TV series closes due to recession

An Bonnán Buí, in Co Tipperary became known as ‘Jacksie’s’

One of the country’s best known rural pubs, made famous in a popular TV comedy series, has closed due to the recession eroding its customer base.

An Bonnán Buí (picured), in the north Tipperary village of Ballinahinch, became known to viewers of Pat Shortt's Killinaskully RTÉ 1 series as "Jacksie's".

However, there was no sign of the recession at the weekend as hundreds crammed into the cosy country pub to enjoy a last round.

“There were some very successful years, but the business has dropped off over the past 18 months or so,” said proprietor Marti- na Moloney. “People just haven’t got the money, but the locals have been very loyal customers to us.”

In recent months, opening times had been reduced and the property has now been placed on the market.

Auctioneer James Lee, who is handling the sale, said the property was guiding at €165,000.

“There are a number of interested parties and the business is going to be sold,” Mr Lee said.

“We have received solid offers and I expect that a deal will be closed within the next couple of weeks and that business will be resumed there before too long.”
