Two young women have died in a car crash in Co Donegal, one of them a mother of three boys.
The incident happened around 4.30pm Wednesday afternoon on the Glenfin Road, about 800 metres past Jackson’s Hotel on the outskirts of Ballybofey.
The two women, one aged 19 and the other 38, were in a car which left the road.
The crash occurred when the car in which they were driving, a blue Citreon C3, left the road in the townland of Camish.
No other car was involved in the accident which took place on a sweeping bend on the R252.
A third person in the car, a male, has been taken to Letterkenny University Hospital with non life-threraening injuries.
The road has been sealed off for a full forensic examination. However, gardaí have confirmed that two people have died as a result of the crash.
Garda Inspector Michael Harrison, head of the Donegal Traffic Corps, appealed to people to again obey the rules of the road and drive sensibly.
“We would again ask people to observe the three main rules when getting into a car and that is to wear a seat belt, to slow not and never to drink and drive.
“Once again we have carnage on Donegal’s roads and we would appeal to anybody who may have witnessed this particular accident to come forward and speak to Gardai in Letterkenny,” he said.
Local priest Fr John Joe Duffy of St Mary’s Church in Stranorlar said “so many families have been affected by today’s crash and our thoughts and prayers go out to them.”
The double fatality comes on the day of Project Edward (European Day Without A Road Death), an EU-wide initiative aimed at going 24 hours without a death on the roads.
The initiative was promoted here by An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority.
Ten people have lost their lives on Donegal’s roads so far this year bringing the total number in Ireland to 136 this year, an increase of 20 on the same period last year.
