Man dies in swimming incident off West Cork

Gardaí hoping post-mortem will establish exact cause of death

The body of a man in his 60s has been recovered from the sea after he died in a swimming incident off the West Cork coast this afternoon.

The man was spotted floating in the water in Roaringwater Bay near Aughadown Pier between Skibbereen and Ballydehob around 1pm.

Schull Coastguard and members of the gardaí recovered the man’s body and his remains are due to be brought to Cork University Hospital for a post-mortem.

It’s understood the man was a strong swimmer and gardaí are hoping the post-mortem will show whether he may have suffered some adverse event in the water.

Gardaí have yet to formally identify the man but it’s understood that he may orginally be from West Cork, had a a holiday home in the area and was a regular visitor there.
