Tributes paid to Ricki Savage (27) from England who had suspected heart attack

A man who collapsed after a suspected heart attack at the end of the Dublin Marathon on Monday has died in hospital.

Ricki Savage (27), who was from England, had been participating in the event in order to raise money for the British Heart Foundation (BHF).

Having completed the run, Mr Savage collapsed at the finishing line.

He was immediately attended to by a St John’s Ambulance medical crew and then taken to St Vincent’s Hospital where he was treated for a suspected heart attack.

He remained there in a stable but very serious condition until he died this afternoon.

In a statement, the organisers of the Airtricity Dublin Marathon said they regretted to "confirm the death of a male participant".

“We would like to commend the St John’s Ambulance medical team and all those in St Vincent’s who looked after Mr Savage and express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. We ask that the family’s privacy is respected at this time.”

Mr Savage’s relations were understood to have been at his bedside since he was taken to hospital. He had been raising money through the website justgiving.com. Donations were being made through the website tonight and numerous warm tributes were being paid to Mr Savage.
