Man critical after explosion in Youghal, Co Cork

Casualty taken by helicopter from Waterford to Cork University Hospital

A man in his 20s is in a critical condition in hospital after being injured in an explosion in an industrial estate in Youghal in east Cork on Wednesday morning.

It’s believed that the man was injured when there was an explosion during the welding of an oil tank at a steel fabricators at Foxhole on the eastern side of the town sometime around 9.45am.

HSE emergency services attended at the scene and the man was medi-vacked by the Irish Coastguard Sikorski helicopter Rescue 117 from Waterford to Cork University Hospital.

The Health and Safety Authority have been notified and it's understood that their inspectors are en route to the scene to begin an investigation into the cause of the accident.
