Man to appear in court in relation to Cork killing

Gardaí believe assailant may have used knives he had found inside house

A 25-year-old man is to appear in court on Wednesday charged in connection with the death of a woman in Cork earlier this week.

Gardaí investigating the death of Marian Horgan (61) recovered a knife at the scene on Tuesday.

Ms Horgan (61), a mother of three, was pronounced dead by a local doctor who had been called the scene of Monday’s attack at the Horgan family home at Murmont Avenue in Montenotte on the city’s north side.

A postmortem examination by the Assistant State Pathologist, Dr Margaret Bolster, confirmed that Ms Horgan, a legal executive, died as a result of stab wounds to the head and torso.

Husband discharged

Meanwhile, her husband, Billy (68), has been discharged from hospital after receiving stab wounds in the same attack.

He is now recovering with relatives in the city.

Gardaí have preserved the Horgan family home while Garda technical experts are due to return this morning to resume a forensic examination.

It is understood there was no sign of a forced entry at the house and gardaí believe the assailant may have used knives he found inside.

The attack happened at about 8am on Monday in the kitchen of the couple’s two-storey semi-detached house in the quiet residential area just off Old Youghal Road.

Disturbance

It is understood that Mr Horgan was upstairs in bed when he heard a disturbance. He came downstairs to the kitchen to find his wife had been attacked and had suffered a stab wound to the head.

He was then attacked by the assailant but he managed to flee the house.

Mr Horgan was seen by a neighbour who was bringing their child to school.

Another neighbour also saw Mr Horgan being pursued by the assailant.

The two neighbours managed to disarm a young man and detain him until gardaí arrived.

The man was arrested under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. He was taken to nearby Mayfield Garda station where detectives questioned him until about 10pm last night.

Retired

Ms Horgan had worked as a legal executive with a local solicitor while Mr Horgan had retired from his job working with people with disabilities on the South

Douglas Road

.

The couple have three adult children, Jennifer, Caroline and Paul.
