Gardaí in Cork have begun an investigation after a Frenchman in his 20s was killed in a hit and run incident in the city centre last night.

The pedestrian was struck by a white Ford Transit van which didn’t stop as he was walking on George’s Quay in the south inner city at about 9.30pm.

The injured man was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Gardaí cordoned off the scene of the incident and Garda forensic crash investigators began examining the scene for clues that would help them identify the van.

Gardaí also began examining CCTV footage of the South Terrace and George’s Quay areas as well as along possible routes that the van may have travelled after the collision.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information that might assist gardaí in their investigation is asked to contact Anglesea St Garda station on 022-4522000, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line on 1800-666111 or any Garda station.
