Gardaí are examining the scene of a house fire in Mayo in which an 80-year-old man lost his life in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Emergency services attended the scene of the fire at Ballymangan, near Hollymount, shortly after midnight.

The man was taken from the burning building by the local fire service and treated at the scene. He died a short time later. The blaze was quickly brought under control by firefighters.

There were no other people in the house at the time.

The man’s body has been brought to the mortuary at Mayo General Hospital and the local coroner has been notified.
