Dublin Fire Brigade tackle gorse fire in Howth

Firefighters called out to Martello Tower after similar incident on Ireland’s Eye

Firefighters are continuing to tackle a gorse fire at Martello Tower, Howth, Co Dublin.

A spokesman for the Dublin Fire Brigade said there is one fire truck fighting the blaze after arriving just after 5pm on Friday evening. There are no houses in the vicinity of the gorse fire.

The fire brigade ferried firefighting equipment out to Ireland's Eye on Thursday evening to battle a separate gorse fire. An Air Corps helicopter was called in to drop water on the fire.

Gorse fires typically occur during periods of sustained hot weather. Winter frost leaves undergrowth too dry, meaning the fires can start easily and spread quickly, causing widespread damage throughout the countryside.
