Boy (6) loses battle for life after Cork hit and run

Youngster had been on life support since being struck while playing near his home

A six-year-old boy injured in a hit and run in east Cork on Wednesday has died at Cork University Hospital this afternoon.

The boy from Ballymacoda village in east Cork was fatally injured when he was struck by a car that failed to stop as he played near his home on Wednesday afternoon.

The emergency services were alerted and the boy was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he remained in a critical condition on life support with his family by his bedside.

But the boy, who was due to turn seven shortly, passed away at the hospital earlier today.

Gardai are to prepare a file on the incident for the DPP after earlier this week arresting a 48-year-old local man and questioning him about the incident before releasing him without charge.
