The discovery was made after a passenger on a bus passing through the roundabout on the east of Galway city spotted the vehicle in the trees and shrubbery and raised the alarm.

Emergency services which arrived at the Martin Roundabout near Galway Clinic in Doughiska discovered the body in the vehicle.

The man’s identity has not been disclosed but it is believed he was in his 60s or may have been older.

Sole occupant

Gardaí believe he may have been there for several days. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

They are investigating the circumstances of the incident and whether the man had become disorientated as he approached the roundabout.

The maroon car was lying on its side and was surrounded by shrubbery.

Gardaí believe the vehicle had been coming from the Dublin direction and had gone through the middle of the roundabout.

It was not visible from the direction in which it had come, but part of it was visible from the Galway direction.

Busy junction

Road closures were put in place at what is one of the busiest junctions in Galway, and the man's body was taken to University Hospital Galway for postmortem.

A technical examination was carried out by gardaí before roads in the area were reopened later in the afternoon.

Gardaí at Mill Street station (091-53800) and at Oranmore (091-388030) have appealed for information.
