Aga Khan show must goes on at Dublin Horse Show despite loss of Pacino

All eyes are on today’s Nations Cup event at Dublin Horse show, but this year one special horse will be missing. Pacino, which helped Ireland win last year’s Aga Khan, took ill during the winter months and died, but his rider, Clement Mahon, knows the show must go on.

Clement, from Clones, Co Monaghan, and his toddler son Louis headed to compete the McMahon horses in the Simmonscourt arena yesterday and are heading to support the Aga Khan team today.

The Nations Cup has eight teams and is the 19th  qualifier of the Furusiyya series, and the last one in Europe Division One.

The starting order, determined by a draw, is:

1. Germany 2. The Netherlands 3. Ukraine 4. USA 5. Britain 6. France 7. Spain 8. Ireland.

Four teams – Britain, Ireland, Spain and Ukraine – will be eligible for Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup Jumping points in the Europe Division.

Team Ireland’s show-jumping manager, Robert Splaine,  announced his team for the Aga Khan Trophy.

Ireland is drawn in the advantageous position of last to jump of the eight teams  in the final leg of the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup Series of 2013, before September’s final in Barcelona.

The  team will line out at 3pm in the following order:

Dermott Lennon/Lough- view Lou Lou; Shane Breen/ Balloon; Conor Swail/ Lansdowne; and Cian O’Connor/ Blue Loyd.

The Irish team, which won last year's Aga Khan trophy, lies sixth on the Furusiyya leaderboard and must stay in the top six teams to qualify for the final. Dublin is the eighth leg of the current series.
