The largest flotilla of boats to visit Limerick has sailed into the city’s marina as part of the inaugural Inland Waterways Association of Ireland Limerick/Shannon Estuary Rally.

Some 40 boats and up to 200 participants from around the country are taking part in the event.

To welcome the inland waterways rally participants to Limerick, a special reception, hosted by Shannon Development and attended by the newly elected Mayor of Limerick Cllr Gerry McLoughlin, was held for them at the Hunt Museum last night.

Welcoming the group, the mayor, in one of his first public functions, described travelling into Limerick city by boat as a “stunningly beautiful experience”.
