The Government has been urged not to implement key McCarthy proposals that would “further marginalise one of the most marginalised groups in society”.

In its pre-budget submission, the Irish Traveller Movement said key recommendations would have devastating effects on Travellers’ lives in terms of equality, accommodation, education, health and employment.

The movement is concerned at the proposed closure of the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and further reductions in community development programmes.

“There would be further divisions between Travellers and the settled community and the many positive achievements of the last 20 years would be undone,” it said.
