Gardaí investigate Cork assault

Gardaí investigating a serious assault in Cork city centre have begun examining CCTV footage in an attempt to identify those responsible for the attack.

The victim - a 36 year old man from Mayfield - was attacked near the junction of Lavitt's Quay and Patrick's Bridge between 12.30am and 1.30am yesterday.

The man suffered a serious slash injury to his face and was brought to Cork University Hospital for treatment but the injury is not life-threatening. He is due to go undergo surgery for the injury at CUH this morning and gardaí hope to be able to speak to him at length later.

Gardaí believe that the man was attacked by a group of up to six people.

Initially it was thought that the man may have been attacked with a broken bottle but now believe that a blade was used to inflict the slash wound on his face.

Gardaí have begun examining CCTV footage covering the Lavitt's Quay and Patrick's Bridge area as well as surrounding streets to try to identify the culprits

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who was in the Lavitt's Quay/Patrick's Bridge area at the time and saw anything suspicious to contact them.

They've also appealed to any taxi drivers who were in the area at the time and may have any information that can help them to contact them at Anglesea St on 021-4522000.
