A former Christian Brother has gone on trial charged with sexually assaulting four boys while teaching at the North Monastery School in Cork in the 1980s and 1990s.

Edward Bryan (59) formerly Br Bryan, Martinvilla, Athboy Road, Trim, Co Meath, denied 10 charges when he was arraigned at Cork Circuit Criminal Court yesterday.

The State alleges that Mr Bryan indecently assaulted the boys at the school between September 1st, 1984 and June 30th, 1990.

Yesterday the jury of five men and seven women heard evidence from one of the complainants that he was just 12 years old when he was abused by then Br Bryan.

He said the abuse happened when he was training for the school basketball team and Br Bryan asked him to come for special weight training to help build him up for basketball.

Br Bryan had asked him to wear a pair of Speedos and during the session the brother asked him to take off his tracksuit pants and strip to his Speedos, which he did.

“I was terrified of him, that’s why I didn’t question him but I did in my head,” he said.

The case continues.
