Met Éireann warns of severe frost and ice early on Monday

Forecaster says day will be dry and sunny with risk of wintry showers

Met Éireann has warned of severe frost and icy stretches on roads on Monday morning following what was expected to be a very cold night .

Issuing a low-temperature warning, the national forecaster said a few hail or snow showers along the north and east coast could be expected on Sunday night but that, overall, it would be a dry, clear night with lowest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees.

Monday will be generally dry and sunny with a risk of some wintry showers, Met Éireann said.

Frost will persist in sheltered areas through the day and will become widespread again after dark.

The met service said the changeable weather would continue, remaining cold through to midweek with frosty nights.

It said the weather would be less cold later in the week but it would also be wet and windy at times.

It said early indications suggested that daytime temperatures would recover to more normal values for Friday and the weekend.

Night time temperatures would vary more and would be low enough in places for some frost.
