MA in international security and conflict at Dublin City University

Stephen Monaghan is doing an MA in international security and conflict at Dublin City University following economic politics and law at Dublin City University

“My career would ideally be something involving politics or security – such as an analyst. I like to question things and to find out the truth. The conflicts we see today are not always black and white. The truth is always more complex than it seems. My career must involve examining information, seeing what challenges there are and finding solutions to them.

"I may have to emigrate to find the career I want. The MA would open doors for me in Europe and America in the conflict, security, international relations and political science fields. Employment would be in a government position, private company, NGO or an international organisation such as the UN.

“My primary degree was highly stimulating and challenging because it examined various issues and research methods of analysis across the aforementioned disciplines that are witnessed in our society on a daily basis.

“When I graduated, I applied for a number of jobs but found it difficult to get responses. The economy was not as strong in 2014 as it is now and when I got interviews and reached the final stages I just could not get the job. Specialising in something was on my mind after graduating but I wanted to gain more work experience first. After months of searching I decided to apply for an MA in DCU.

“My MA looks at the causes of conflict, the role of powerful nations and the wider global community, the dynamic nature of peacekeeping, conflict resolution, regional security, terrorism, and international relations theories.

“This MA is well-regarded both at home and abroad and provides a stimulating work environment. The skills you acquire are highly desired by public and private bodies worldwide. DCU also has something which I feel other universities lack somewhat: a strong community atmosphere – which I think is due to its size – everyone is very friendly and helpful.”
