Mayo inquest:A coroner expressed concern yesterday that the Health and Safety Authority had not yet forwarded a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions on the death 18 months ago of a worker in a chicken processing factory.

Martin Joseph Walsh, Cloonaughill, Charlestown, Co Mayo died in the incident at the Western Brand chicken plant in Ballyhaunis on November 19th, 2010.

At an inquest in Castlebar which opened and adjourned yesterday, coroner for south Mayo John O’Dwyer said he was concerned about the delay as Mr Walsh’s family wanted to know what happened and there was an obligation on him to conduct an inquest as quickly as possible. He said the authority had informed him last month that its inquiry was complete and a file was under preparation for forwarding to the DPP.

Describing the delay as “frustrating” for the family, he adjourned the hearing until next month.
