Two men have been arrested following an attempted armed robbery at a post office in Dublin 15.

The incident occurred in Clonsilla this morning. Two men, armed with a handgun and a hammer, entered the post office at about 10.20am and threatened staff.

A Garda spokeswoman said the men left the premises empty handed and departed the area on a motorcycle.

Two men aged in their 20s were arrested at about 11am at Kilbeggan in Co Westmeath, some 80km away, following a search operation involving members of the Garda Traffic Corps and Regional Support Unit.

They are being detained at Mullingar Garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
