Tributes paid to teenager Kym Harley killed in Donegal road crash

19-year-old councillor’s daughter was a front seat passenger when vehicle hit a ditch

Tributes and messages of sympathy have been paid to the young Ballybofey woman who died in this morning's road crash in Co Donegal.

Kym Harley (19) died after the car in which she was a front seat passenger hit a ditch at Dreenan just before 4.30am.

She is the daughter of well-known Fine Gael county councillor Martin Harley.

The former St Columba’s College, Stranorlar student celebrated her 19th birthday last week and worked in her father’s bar, Cheers, in Ballybofey.

The driver of the car has escaped serious injury but is being treated for shock. The accident happened just a couple of hundred metres from the home of the victim.

The local community is in shock at the death. Local Sinn Féin county councillor Gary Doherty said people were numb after the tragedy. “I would like to extend my sincerest condolences to the Harley family and in particular my council colleague Martin on the sad and tragic death of their beloved daughter. ”

Gardaí have appealed for anybody who was in the area of the crash, which is close to the Ballybofey Tennis Club, to come forward.

Inspector David Kelly said a full investigation into the cause of the crash has begun. “The male driver in the car hasn’t suffered injuries buy roadblocks are in place at the moment.

“A full Garda forensic team has been deployed to the scene of the accident in an effort to determine the cause of the incident,” he said.
