Man killed as car hits concrete wall is fifth weekend road fatality

A man in his 70s has died after his car hit a concrete wall in Co Carlow on Sunday morning.

The incident, which involved a single vehicle, took place on Cloughna about 8.30am and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The stretch of road where the incident happened was closed to allow Garda Forensic Collision Investigators to examine the scene and has since been reopened.

The local coroner has been notified. Gardaí are appealing to contact Carlow Garda Station on (059) 9136620 or the The Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111.

A total of five people have died on Irish roads this weekend in separate road incidents.

A man in his 20s died when his car crashed into a ditch in Lurgans, Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan on Sunday.

A 26-year-old motorcyclist died after he collided with three cars at the Pigeons, Athlone, Co Westmeath at about 8pm on Saturday.

A man in his 70s died following a single-vehicle crash at Dromore West, Co Sligo, at 2.30pm on Saturday afternoon. The man who was driving a tractor was pronounced dead at the scene .

A woman died after being struck by a Luas tram about 12.35am on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred at St James's Walk, Rialto in Co Dublin.

Figures from the gardaí show a total of 82 people have died in traffic collisions.
