The PSNI has arrested and charged a 36-year-old man following a planned search in north Belfast.

Detectives searched a property in the Boundary Way area last night during which a quantity of ammunition was recovered.

The man has been charged with possession of ammunition under suspicious circumstances. He is due to appear before Belfast magistrates on March 14th.

In a separate development, police have said an overnight bomb alert in Co Antrim was an elaborate hoax.

The incident began in the early hours of this morning following the discovery of a suspicious object at the back of a house in Broadlands Gardens in Carrickfergus.

The homes were evacuated while British army technical officers were called in to deal with the object.

The alert was called off shortly before 7am and the householders were allowed back into their homes.

Police have called for residents who saw anything suspicious in the area just before discovery of the object to come forward.
